Current status

Rates of IVT have further increased since 2021, now 16 countries belonging to all regions of Europe report IVT rates (in ischemic stroke) above 15%, several far above. Overall, the access to IVT is a success story as the status is now adequate in many European countries, however, significant inequity remains as 11 countries report rates at 9% or less, 4 less than 5%.

All but two of the countries reporting IVT-rates at 15% or above, have a national stroke plan or ongoing work, while all but 4 of the countries in the group with best access to IVT have a national registry. This underlines the impact of organization at a regional level or higher to ensure access to stroke care.

The total number of IVT treatments reported by 33 countries in 2022 was 128 506 out of 899 334 ischemic strokes. That is 14.3% IVT rate in Europe.

The target is IVT treatment in at least 15% of patients with ischaemic stroke.
