Key Performance Indicators

KPI 6b

Access to a stroke unit for patients with acute stroke, defined as % of patients admitted to a stroke unit for care within 24 hours after admission to hospital.

Current status

Few countries monitor timing of access to stroke unit care in spite of the time sensitive nature of this intervention. Only 6 countries report access for at least 75% of patients within 24 hours. No improvement is observed since 2021 and the status on admission to stroke unit care within 24 hours gives cause for serious concern.
Ensuring and monitoring timely access to stroke unit care would be an important step towards the overarching targets of SAP-E.

The target is access to stroke unit care as first level of care in at least 90% of patients.

Admission to a stroke unit within 24 hours: 2022

75% or more of patients (registry data) 75% or more of patients (estimate) 50-74% of patients 25 – 49% of patients Less than 25% of patients Data not available
