Access to stroke unit care for patients with acute stroke; Percentage admitted to stroke unit care within 24 hours of arrival.
Current status
Timely admission to stroke unit care is a critical component of effective acute stroke management. This KPI assesses the proportion of patients admitted to a stroke unit within 24 hours of hospital arrival.
In 2024, 29 countries reported monitoring of time to stroke unit admission, representing an increase compared to previous reporting cycles (20 in 2023). Despite this, only 2 countries met the target of ≥ 90% admission within 24 hours, both based on high quality data. This represents an improvement from 2023 where no countries met the target.
In conclusion, these findings indicate that, in addition to limited access to stroke unit care, timely access remains insufficient across Europe.
The ultimate target is that at least 90 % of all patients with acute stroke are admitted to stroke unit care within 24 hours of presenting in hospital. Monitoring of time to admission is considered an intermediate step towards achieving this target.
